Social Networks Comparative

The three most popular social networks in use here in Brazil are: Plurk, Facebook and Orkut.

In this article we will talk about the differences amongst the three social networks named above. To begin with, each social network and their respective appliances can be useful in their own way and each appliance has a specific need.

Plurk contains a more visual and interactive interface, which can be personalized in different aspects. For example, you can change your home background, your timeline background, import backgrounds, change the page body style, among others features. Plurk has a peculiar and intelligent way of showing the messages, which are displayed in a timeline. Firstly, the messages are marked as unread. When you click on them or select the button ‘mark as read’ it gives you the control of the messages. However, the most interesting and innovative feature of Plurk is the accumulation of points called ‘Karma’. They can be acquired when you achieve some objectives, such as inviting friends to join in Plurk. Otherwise, if you do not use this social network very often, you lose some ‘Karma’ points. When you reach a specific ‘Karma’ value, you unlock other features and styles, which motivate the user to use Plurk - and to Plurk - more often.

About Facebook, it is based on a new perspective on programming and styling. It uses a very simple and objective interface. The interface has a basic style and a well structured organization to make the website easy to use. It has one main objective: to connect people with common interests. It is the social network that has the biggest number of users around the world.

Orkut, in the beginning, was a simple social network which linked people by friendship and similar affinities. The Orkut homepage is a personal profile containing a photograph, a personal description, likes and dislikes and the marital status of the user. Nowadays Orkut offers a lot more gadgets, such as HTML editor, personal videos, customized profile page, friends updates, incorporated Google Talk tool, applications and games, themes, status phrase, and other features. Orkut has become a toolkit, a webspace, and a social network. It is the most complete social network currently in use. However, it presented problems related to organization and interface.

History of Plurk

Plurk is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates (otherwise known as plurks) through short messages or links, which can be up to 140 text characters in length.

Updates are then shown on the user's home page using a timeline which lists all the updates received in chronological order, and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. Users can respond to other users' updates from their timeline through the Plurk.com website, by instant messaging, or by text messaging.

Plurk was developed by and envisioned as a communication medium meant to form a balance between blogs and social networks, and between e-mail messaging and instant messaging. After months of development, Plurk was launched on May 2008.

The etymology of the name was explained by the developers as such:

  • abbreviation of 'people' and 'lurk'
  • portmanteau of 'play' and 'work'
  • acronym of peace, love, unity, respect, and karma
  • verb neologism, similar to how Google was eventually used as a verb

Plurk's interface shows updates in horizontal form through a scrollable timeline written in JavaScript and updated through AJAX. Users can post new messages with optional 'qualifiers', which are one-word verbs used to represent a thought (e.g. "feels", "thinks", "loves", etc.). There are also advanced features such as sending updates only to a subset of your friends, posting updates on events earlier in the day, and sharing images, videos, and other media. Plurks can also be "liked", as in other social sites.

Plurk also supports group conversations between friends and allows usage of emoticons together with the usual text micro-blogging.

The Plurk.com developers released public access to API on December 4, 2009

Due to messages being sent between users in near-realtime, many users use Plurk as an alternative to chat.

History of Orkut

Orkut is a social networking website that is owned and operated by Google Inc. The service is designed to help users meet new friends and maintain existing relationships. The website is named after its creator, Google employee Orkut Büyükkökten. Although Orkut is less popular in the United States than competitors Facebook and MySpace, it is one of the most visited websites in India and Brazil. As of April 2010, 48.0% of Orkut's users are from Brazil, followed by India with 39.2% and United States with 2.2%. Recently though, due to advent of other social networking sites, the usage of orkut has decreased.

Originally hosted in California, in August 2008 Google announced that Orkut would be fully managed and operated in Brazil, by Google Brazil, in the city ofBelo Horizonte. This was decided due to the large Brazilian user base and growth of legal issues.

As of June 2011, Alexa traffic ranked orkut.com 96th and orkut.com.br 94th in the world; the website currently has more than 100 million active users worldwide. Anyone 18 years old or older can join Orkut.

In 2003, Google offered to purchase the social network Friendster, but the offer was declined by that company. Google then internally commissioned Orkut Büyükkökten to work on a competing independent project. The result was Orkut. The product launched on January 24, 2004. The community membership was originally by invitation only:

"Orkut is unique and fun, because it's an organically growing network of trusted friends. That way we will all have at least one person to vouch for them. If you know someone who is a member of Orkut, that person can invite you to join as well. If you don't know an Orkut member, wait a bit and most likely you soon will. We look forward to having you as part of the Orkut community."

During the first year, the United States had the largest user base. By word of mouth various Brazilians began adopting and inviting more friends, in a viral process driven by the blogosphere. Soon after, Brazil surpassed the U.S. in the number of users and Orkut started becoming heavily popular in Brazil. Americans then started leaving the service and switching to other similar sites such as MySpace and Friendster. This phenomenon was covered by the English blogosphere with some criticism towards Brazilians because they tended to communicate (not only among themselves) using their native language, Portuguese, and not English.

From that time, Orkut growth was driven by Brazilian users, first being opened to everyone by register and becoming one of the most popular websites in Brazil. The creator Orkut Büyükkökten visited Brazil in 2007, in an attempt to understand the success in that country. In 2007 Orkut began attracting a large number of Indians who were seemingly not intimidated by the number of Brazilians on the site. Orkut also has a simplified site for mobile users. "m.Orkut.com". In 2008, a new feature was introduced for users having slow internet connections to access Orkut using the "View Orkut in lighter version" setting.

Over the years, Orkut has also found great popularity in Estonia as witnessed by a survey conducted by the independent research center GfK Custom Research Baltic which showed how Orkut is the most used social network platform in that country.
